December 2019: A Message from Our Director

At the end of each year, it is customary for the staff of the Wolf River Conservancy to review our accomplishments over the past 12 months and to begin planning for the next year. Sometimes, though, we need to broaden our perspective on our organization's work.  We recently tallied up some numbers for the past five years, from 2015 to the end of 2019, and thought we should share those numbers with you. It is your generous financial support that has made it possible, after all.

Over the last five years, the Wolf River Conservancy has...

  •  - Protected over 1,230 acres of land. Our cumulative total is 17,000 acres protected since our founding in 1985.
  •  - Completed and opened to the public 7 miles of the Wolf River Greenway.  We now have a cumulative total of 10 ten miles open and another 6 miles           under construction.
  •  - Led over 2,900 participants on paddle trips on the Wolf River.
  •  - Accumulated 21,000 volunteer service hours on projects, paddles, and events in Shelby and Fayette counties.
  •  - Reached over 18,000 people of all ages through environmental education programs.

All of our projects, programs, and events should contribute to advancing our mission to protect and enhance the Wolf River and its watershed as a sustainable natural resource. Through land conservation projects, environmental education and recreation programs, and the construction of the Wolf River Greenway, we deliver on this mission. We also advocate for the watershed when threats arise. In 2019, we helped to successfully defeat a proposed landfill to be built on the Wolf River floodplain. Most recently, we have opposed the injection of toxic chemicals into our groundwater by a manufacturing firm.  Our work is certainly not done. Bu our work is far from over; there is more habitat in need of protection, more community members to educate and introduce to the Wolf River, a Greenway to complete.  And threats to our environment will continue to require our advocacy.

We share all this information with you because only with your continued financial support can we continue to deliver on our mission to serve our community.  Please visit to make an easy secured online gift.  Our Challenge Grant from our Board of Directors is matching all gifts $1 for $1 up to $75,000 until December 31, 2019.

Wishing you a warm and wonderful holiday season!

Keith Cole
Executive Director
