Intern Spotlight: Haley Deatherage

My name is Haley Deatherage and I am going into my second year at the University of the Ozarks. I am majoring in Environmental Studies with a minor in Business and another in Outdoor Leadership. I chose an internship at the Wolf River Conservancy because I was looking for a well-rounded experience that would fit with the three things I am currently studying.

During the past month, I have gained many valuable experiences and have gotten to meet really amazing people. I got to spend a lot of time in the office learning skills like filing and data entry while also getting to see what it looks like behind the scenes at a nonprofit. I got a chance to see what goes into planning for fundraising events and write community posts to advertise for some of them. Even though this part was great, my favorite thing would have to be getting outside into the areas that are being protected. The two kayaking trips that I attended on the Wolf River were amazing and showed exactly why protecting the watershed is so important. Another job that I really enjoyed was taking care of three butterfly habitats that have been built in Shelby County. Through this project I got a chance to learn about native plants and pollinator species. Overall I've been very pleased with my experience at the WRC and have gained a lot of guidance in what I would like to get from my education and what to look forward to in a future career.

Haley Deatherage joined us an intern from July 21st to August 18th.  Thank you, Haley, for all your help and best of luck in the future!
