July 2020: A Message from Our Director

Dear Wolf River Conservancy friend,

We are very excited to share with you that Cathy Justisour Director of Education, has received the Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Award from The Garden Club of America. Cathy was nominated locally by the Memphis Garden Club, a member of The Garden Club of America.

The Garden Club of America, as part of its scholarship program, offers this award to an individual who provides outstanding education to youth. The Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Fund for Early Environmental Education was  established “to recognize an individual who, through working with  children under 16 years of age in horticulture and the environment, has inspired their appreciation of the beauty and fragility of our planet.”

Cathy joins eight other educators in receiving this prestigious award for 2020. The other recipients are located in California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Cathy has served as the Director of Education for the Conservancy since 2007. She leads the Conservancy’s Education Program, focusing both on in-classroom curriculum and outdoor experiential learning projects for youth and adults, including several gardens utilizing native plants to support wildlife. She is also a facilitator for Project WET educator workshops. Cathy provides a wide range of programming for K-12 students, families, and community members including field trips, service projects, and annual frog chorus walks, stream strolls, and butterfly workshops - all with the objective to provide our community with a better understanding of the Wolf River watershed, its connection to our drinking water, its biodiversity, and its need for protection.

During these COVID-19 times, you can participate virtually in a series of lectures by outstanding guest speakers - an effort coordinated by Cathy. A visit to our Activity Calendar will provide you a glimpse of the programs planned for the next few weeks.

We are so pleased and proud to have Cathy leading the Wolf River Conservancy Education Program.  Please join us in congratulating Cathy for this national recognition of her work. Thank you for your commitment to serving our community, and especially our youth!
