Remembering Esther Klyce West Pearson

IN MEMORIUM – Esther Klyce Pearson

Earlier this month, the Wolf River Conservancy lost a dear friend – Esther Klyce Pearson.   A philanthropist and business and community leader, Esther was a visionary in the establishment of the Wolf River Conservancy and its mission in the early 1980’s.  In addition to being one of the Conservancy’s founders and officers, Eleanor documented the organization’s founding principles and vision and kept pristine records for more than two decades.

In October 2015, the Conservancy presented a collection of digitized historical documents, entitled “Esther Klyce West Pearson:  Early Wolf River Conservancy History,” to the Memphis Public Library & Information Center for the benefit of the community. These documents were added to the existing Wolf River Conservancy Collection located in the Memphis and Shelby County Room, located on the 4th Floor of the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Avenue. During the 2015 presentation, Conservancy Executive Director, Keith Cole, commented, “The Wolf River Conservancy proudly presents these documents to the Memphis Public Library as an important piece of the organization’s and the community’s history. This collection of documents was donated to the Conservancy by one of its founders, Esther Klyce West Pearson.  As we celebrate our 33rd anniversary this year, this collection will be an invaluable resource in helping tell the story of the organization’s early beginnings and showing the direction of the organization in relationship to the vision of its founders."

A realtor and business owner, Esther, along with several other founding members in the real estate field, understood the importance of Wolf River to the community.  Her vision and commitment to protecting and enhancing the Wolf River and its watershed as a sustainable natural resource has served as an inspiration over the first 33 years of the Conservancy.  We are grateful to her leadership in protecting and preserving the “Wonder of the Wolf” for generations to come.
