Wolf River Greenway Celebrates Downtown Grand Opening

The North Mud Island section of the Wolf River Greenway formally opened to the public on Saturday, Oct. 21, marking a transformation from a former dumping ground to a 1.2-mile paved trail in a park-like setting at the Wolf River’s confluence with the Mississippi River.

The celebration was complete with a ceremonial ribbon cutting, music, free yoga and fitness classes, Jimmy Ogle walking tours, Community Partner booths, food trucks, kids games and more. Some 700 bikers, walkers, Mud Island families, project leaders and media stopped by the grand opening celebration over the course of the day.

“If we create connections, we create opportunities in our community,” said Keith Cole, executive director of the Wolf River Conservancy, during the formal remarks.

The Conservancy partnered with the City of Memphis Parks & Neighborhoods Division for the major facelift of the Downtown Greenway trail. Since construction on the trail began in 2016, the Conservancy, volunteers and Greenway contractors have removed nearly 100 tires, countless bags of trash, and invasive plants to improve conservation values of the Downtown site.

“The City of Memphis is proud to partner with the Wolf River Conservancy on the Wolf River Greenway project, which is creating corridors of opportunity for people to go out and enjoy healthy and active living, without barriers,” said Maria Munoz-Blanco, the city's director of Parks and Neighborhoods.

We can't wait to continue celebrating new Greenway segment openings in 2018! For more photos of the Mud Island grand opening event, please visit the Wolf River Conservancy Facebook Page.  We've also provided links to several articles and a video below.
