136 Acres of Wetlands Protected Forever

Western Fayette County is one of the fastest developing areas in the Mid-South.  Playing off the successes of Collierville, Arlington, and other quickly suburbanizing areas, Fayette County offers a lower property tax haven for people looking to relocate. This may sound like an ad for Fayette County, but it underscores the need for land conservation.

As you’ve likely heard by now, Wolf River Conservancy was awarded a grant to protect wetlands via the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA for short).  This grant has enabled us to protect 136 acres of wetlands along Shaw’s Creek in the growing city of Piperton, TN.  Housing subdivisions are knocking on the doors of this and other amazing wetland resources throughout the watershed, thus the need for Wolf River Conservancy and landowners to conserve more land.  The landowners realized that these wetlands are more valuable in their natural state than altered by development.  NAWCA provided us with sufficient funds to ensure this waterfowl habitat - that also recharges the Memphis Sand Aquifer - will be protected as conservation land in perpetuity.  The property will join the more than 1,750 acres of Wolf River Wildlife Management Area lands that are immediately adjacent.  This is the first property to be conserved forever via the 2022 NAWCA grant we received.  We have our eyes set on more strategic wetlands in the watershed to further preserve and enhance the Wolf River and its watershed.

Thank you to anyone that supports the Conservancy and our mission to protect land.  Your donations help enable our ability to get grants such as NAWCA.
