River Reflections: A Great Paddle Trip and An October Forecast

On our First Saturday paddle on Sept. 1st, over 40 people participated in the event and successfully navigated the historic Ghost section of the Wolf River. The continuing shortage of rain resulted in a very low water level and we encountered 4 different portages along the water route. With assistance and direction from the guides, the guests successfully circumnavigated these obstacles and enjoyed the added adventure they brought to the paddle. Everyone  remained in high spirits for the entire trip.

After making landfall in southern Louisiana on September 11, Hurricane Francine continued inland and north along the Mississippi River. On September 12, the water levels began to rise from area rains and continue their climb through Sunday September 22.  The river is now slowly dropping as the Mississippi River carries excess water to the Gulf. With any luck, we will not experience the low water levels of July and August again this year.

What are we looking for in October? The key word will be color. We are beginning to experience the first indication of the coming autumn splendor. The roadsides and creek banks are starting to exhibit the brilliant red foliage of various sumac  (Rhus sp) plants.  On the water, the native Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica) is showing a variety of red leaf concentrations along the entire river path. Ultimately, you may be able to experience the appearance of the river being “on fire” from the brillant colors exhibited by the Itea. Intermingled among the reds along the bank, you can also note the red or golden hues on many Maple Tree species in the area.  There are 11 native Maple (Acer sp.) trees in the United States

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our first experience on the Wolf River. We kept saying why did it take us 20 years to get on the river?  So glad I found info about WRC on social media which made it easy to click and connect and sign up.

The weather was outstanding last Saturday, we met some new friends, and we learned a lot of history about the Wolf River and the Ghost River section.

Hope to join you again soon!   Jeannie M
