On the Greenway: You Rock, Earth Day Volunteers!
For the final service project in the 2024 Wolf River Restoration Series, presented by Brother International Corporation, we celebrated Earth Day at the Wolf River Greenway’s Shady Grove trailhead at 6324 Humphreys Blvd. Our sincere thanks to Bioventus, our Earth Day Event Day Sponsor!
A total of 91 amazing volunteers from Bioventus, University of Memphis, the Memphis Health Department, and individuals from neighborhoods both nearby and faraway participated in a variety of projects, installing 4 bat houses along the trail, a purple martin gourd rack, and a floating wetland habitat island planted with native plants – and they removed approximately 1 acre of highly invasive, non-native plants such as wild, thorny Callery pear trees and Chinese privet. To put that into perspective, 1 acre is about half the area of a Manhattan city block!
Without the support of the many volunteers who join us on our service projects, our ongoing restoration efforts would be extremely difficult if not impossible to achieve. The Wolf River Conservancy team looks forward to the next great adventure with another wonderful team of hardworking volunteers. Thank you, everyone!
