February 2025: A Message from Our Director

Dear Wolf River Conservancy Friend,
This weekend we will be hosting our 20th annual Tree Planting event, our most enduring and popular volunteer event of the year. We are so excited to welcome hundreds of Memphians to Mud Island to plant native tree species and further beautify our city’s riverfront!
Connecting people to the green spaces around them and fostering a lasting appreciation for our environment is central to the work of the Wolf River Conservancy. From building the Greenway to protecting and preserving land in the Wolf River Watershed that recharges the aquifer, these are critical themes that drive our work. The legacy of the Conservancy has been built through projects like the Annual Tree Planting. Since our founding we have planted more than 73,000 native trees in our community - a staggering statistic that the thousands of volunteers and Wolf River Conservancy supporters who put a shovel to dirt to plant a tree over the years can be immensely proud of.
Further down in this month’s newsletter you’ll find the story of our very first tree planting event. Many of the folks who came together on that fall day in late November of 1990 are still around today! And some of the seedlings they planted are beautiful, mature native trees that will continue to stand for decades to come. I wonder if they knew then the impact their efforts would have or what they would inspire all these years later. With tens of thousands of trees planted since, I want to invite you to join us on March 1st, not just for what it means for our city today, but for what it means for our future and the generations who will look back and be grateful that you did.
