Wolf River Harbor Cleanup: Thanks, Volunteers!

On the morning of Dec. 11th, 39 volunteers braved wind and cold to join staff from Wolf River Conservancy and Living Lands and Waters on Mud Island for a Wolf River Harbor Cleanup.  Living Lands and Water supplied johnboats and their flagship barge for moving some volunteers up the harbor to spread out the cleanup effort, and for collecting bags of trash and other items afterwards. The low water level left much of the bank and the trash accumulated there exposed and accessible, so we wanted to take advantage of this opportunity for a cleanup. The trash tally for the morning was 27.5 automobile tires, 2 large semi tires, 75 bags of trash, 55 lbs of scrap metal, 100 lbs of sodden carpet and other large items, an electric scooter, 170 feet of barge line, and a propane tank. The tank will be recycled at the FedEx campus in Collierville later this month; cans and plastic bottles were recycled as well.  A shout out to the staff of Memphis River Parks for providing a good drop-off location for the trash!
